The Saxon is committed to a comprehensive green efficiency programme, which includes well-managed recycling practices, organic gardening and environmentally friendly marketing collateral.
The hotel has an efficient recycling programme in place with an ongoing goal to to reduce landfill volume by 25% each year and ultimately reaching a zero-landfill target. Our paper management system ensures that all paper packaging and printing are separated efficiently, our glass bottles are separated and collected by an outsourced recycling plant for recycling and reusing. Our energy supply and water usage are managed by smart meters to ensure maximum efficiency. The hotel makes use of two rainwater reservoirs for irrigation purposes with the use of 4 boreholes as a backup measure when required. The hotel gardens are all indigenous in respect to our natural resources.
In order to reduce the prevalence of single-use plastic at the hotel, we have instituted measures regarding the packaging of stock delivered to the property. We proudly source items produced locally to support local development but also to limit the carbon waste produced in transporting goods to the hotel.
The Saxon experience is an authentic reflection of the surroundings of the property that imparts a sense of harmony and wellbeing and delivers lasting memories. It is what sets the Saxon apart in this competitive tier and allows the hotel to deliver a kind of luxury that cannot be possessed but only experienced.
The Saxon is a recognised South African hotel and supports its local cultural heritage by using heritage ingredients for the dishes on the menu in the restaurants and banqueting department in the hotel.
As a highly respected patron of the arts, the hotel’s extensive art and artefact collection have been selected from both established and emerging artists from across Africa, Europe and the East. In tribute to its proudly South African heritage, the Saxon supports local artists, both established and emerging, with a collection of over 200 original artworks.
The Saxon has developed a people culture, where staff are encouraged to continually grow, learn and develop. The Saxon accepts a bi-annual intake of trainees in the kitchen, and across other competencies throughout the hotel. The Saxon Wine programme has helped offer employment to college leavers looking for a stepping stone into professional beverage service. Over the years, many of the country’s certified sommeliers have been beneficiaries of this training program. Some of them have moved on to pursue international opportunities, to showcase the skills and knowledge they have acquired through the assistance of Saxon’s programme.
Our kitchen sources sustainable items for inclusion in our menus across the hotel. We source from local suppliers, use local, quality ingredients, supplied by farmers, herders, fishers, butchers, bakers and artisans, who preserve traditional knowledge and techniques and who work with respect for the environment, and animal welfare.
SOUL by Saxon, a set of bespoke amenities created by the hotel was launched in December 2021 as part of our greater sustainability efforts. This range of Proudly South African, ethically produced amenities have been created for guests to enjoy whilst at the hotel and are available for retail in our Spa. The amenities contain only natural, locally sourced ingredients and have been approved by Beauty Without Cruelty, the bottles used for the SOUL range are recycled and recyclable and the boxes used for our in-suite amenities are packed by residents of two well-known care facilities in Johannesburg that care for people with mental challenges.
We have also partnered with a wonderful team in Diepsloot, a rural township in Gauteng, who produce our shoe mitts and assist in packing shower caps, vanity kits and the like. A small contribution to caring for our community whilst still offering our guests only the best in African luxury.
